LGBT Equality
Our specialist Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) consultant Sue Sanders (co-chair of LGBT History Month and Schools-Out) offers two exciting workshops for the Equality Academy.
This workshop
- Addresses the questions: “What is ‘LGBT’?”, “What are ‘homophobia’, ‘biphobia’ and ‘transphobia’?” and “Why do they matter to me in my workplace and personally?”
- Raises awareness of the most misunderstood “protected characteristics” (gender reassignment & sexual orientation) under the Equality Act, and the implications of the law
- Develops confidence and safety in exploring and asking questions about LGBT issues
- Overcomes resistance, negativity and fear around these areas through creating a positive and enjoyable learning environment
- Addresses questions of best practice in the workplace
Challenging Homophobic Bullying for Safer Schools
This workshop is designed to emphasise the inclusion of LGBT people and issues, and to tackle bullying of LGBT pupils and staff, in schools and colleges. The workshop helps to
- Build confidence and competence of staff to include all the protected strands, in particular lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and issues, in the curriculum, and deal effectively with homophobia and transphobia.
- Enable staff to understand the implications of Equality Act and Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) as it applies to schools, covering all the protected characteristics with a focus on Sexual Orientation and Gender Reassignment
- Explore effective ways of dealing with bullying both proactively and responsively
- Enable school staff to recognise how to dovetail recent legislation with their action plans to positively influence school culture.
See the new Ofsted – LGBT inspecting provisions (Feb 2012) - no school can achieve a ‘good’ result unless they have policies in place which acknowledge the needs of LGBT pupils and directly tackle potential homophobia and homophobic bullying
As part of our celebration of LGBT History Month 2012 we have updated and further developed our Sexual Orientation Quiz – test your knowledge (and perceptions) – see how you get on!
